Summary

Walking the Middle Atlas from Fez — a day of fresh air & small surprises

You’ll leave Fez behind for a day trip into the Middle Atlas towns, walking easy trails with a local guide and sharing laughter over fresh bread and olives. Expect pine-scented air, glimpses of village life, and moments of unexpected quiet—little details you’ll remember long after returning.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the way the light changed as we left Fez — city colors fading into these soft green hills. Our driver, Hassan, had this habit of humming along to old Berber songs on the radio. I kept the window cracked just enough to catch that cool, piney smell (it’s sharper than I expected), and every so often you’d see sheep clustered under cedar trees. The drive isn’t long — maybe an hour or so? But it feels like you’re slipping into another world, especially when you spot those little villages tucked between the slopes.

We stopped in one town where kids were playing football in the dust and a woman selling oranges waved at us like she knew our guide. He pointed out how people here speak Tamazight as much as Arabic — I tried to say “thank you” in Tamazight and totally butchered it; everyone laughed, which made me feel less like a tourist for a second. The hike itself wasn’t hard, more like a long walk with pauses to watch storks circling overhead or listen to water running somewhere below. There’s this moment when you crest a hill and suddenly everything goes quiet except for wind in the grass — I still think about that silence.

I didn’t expect lunch to taste so fresh — bread still warm from someone’s oven, olives that actually taste different from what I buy back home. We ate outside, legs dangling over a stone wall while our guide told stories about winters here (apparently it snows a lot). On the way back to Fez, everyone was quieter, maybe tired or just full of mountain air. That last stretch before you see city walls again feels weirdly bittersweet…like you’re leaving something behind even though it was only a day trip from Fez to Middle Atlas.
