The Experience

First thing I noticed leaving Fez was how the city just sort of faded behind us—one minute it’s all tiled walls and honking scooters, then suddenly you’re rolling through piney hills and the air smells different. Our driver, Hassan, kept pointing out things I’d never have noticed: a patch of snow clinging to a rooftop in “the Moroccan city with the Swiss style” (that’s what he called Ifrane), kids bundled up like it was Siberia. I didn’t expect Morocco to feel cold like that. My hands were still half asleep when we stopped for coffee at some roadside place—bitter, but it woke me up.

The Cedars forest is where things got weirdly quiet. You hear your own feet crunching old needles, and then—rustle—monkeys everywhere. They’re Barbary macaques, apparently, and they know exactly which tourists have snacks. One of them stared me down until I caved and handed over a peanut. Hassan laughed and said they’re smarter than most people he knows. There’s this earthy smell in the woods, almost sweet if you breathe deep enough. It lingered on my jacket for hours.

After that we drove through a couple Berber villages tucked into the Middle Atlas Mountains. The houses looked almost hidden against the rocks; laundry flapping between doorways, someone waving from a window. We met an older man who lived in one of the caves nearby—he offered us mint tea without saying much else, just this slow smile that made me feel like we’d interrupted something important.
