The experience
The journey starts at 8 a.m. from your Fez accommodation in a comfortable minivan, heading south through the Middle Atlas Mountains. Your first stop is Ifrane, known for its alpine-style architecture and ski resort, then Azrou, where you can spot wild Barbary apes in the cedar forests. After lunch in Midelt, the landscape shifts as you approach the desert: the Ziz Valley opens up with its contrast of green palms against red earth and ochre-colored Berber houses built into the hillside. By late afternoon you reach Merzouga, where a 4×4 takes over for the final transfer to your luxury camp nestled between the Erg Chebbi dunes.
At the camp, you'll have time to rest before setting out on a camel trek into the dunes as the sun drops toward the horizon. Dinner is served in the camp, followed by traditional music under a sky full of stars. The next morning, camp staff wake you early so you can ride your camel back and watch the sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, the return journey to Fez retraces the Atlas route with scenic stops, arriving back in the city by evening.
