The Experience
We kicked off in Essaouira, helmets on and dust already in the air. The quad felt heavier than I’d expected — kind of thrilling, honestly. Our guide Youssef grinned as he checked our jackets (“windy today, but that’s normal here,” he said). He waved us forward and we rumbled out past the city edge, straight into this mix of salty breeze and sun-warmed earth. The engine’s hum got weirdly soothing after a while, almost like white noise against the crash of distant waves.
The landscape kept changing — one minute it was scraggly argan trees, then suddenly wide open fields that smelled faintly sweet (maybe wild herbs?). We passed a group of kids waving from the side of a dusty road; one shouted something I couldn’t catch but our guide just laughed and called back. At some point we slowed near a village where women were sitting outside, hands busy cracking nuts for oil. I tried to say thank you in Arabic when they smiled at us — probably butchered it.
I didn’t expect to feel so far from everything so quickly. There was this moment when we stopped on a rise overlooking the ocean — all you could hear was wind and gulls, no city noise at all.
