The experience

I’ll admit, I almost bailed when I saw the helmet hair situation in the mirror at pickup: nobody warns you about that. Our driver grinned and said something about “wind being good luck here.” We met our instructor just outside Essaouira, who handed us jackets that still smelled faintly of salt and engine oil. He showed us how to work the quad (I stalled it twice, no shame), but he was patient. Just laughed and said “Essaouira is for learning.”

The first stretch was all pine forest, the kind where sunlight comes in sideways and you can hear nothing but the engine and your own nervous laugh. Then suddenly we hit the open beach, so wide, so empty except for a couple of fishermen pulling up nets near Sidi Kaouki. One waved us over to show off his bucket of sea urchins.
