The experience
The day starts with a pickup at 8:30 am in Marrakech, then heads south toward the Atlas Mountains. The route climbs through the Asni valley, passing Azrou village (the oldest Berber settlement in the area) before reaching Imlil at the heart of the High Atlas. You walk through the traditional village itself, crossing paths with earth-and-stone houses built by hand and a waterfall on the way down.
Lunch is traditional Moroccan food, eaten before the afternoon leg. After eating, the tour moves through the Kik plateau, another cluster of Berber villages where you stop to drink tea inside a family home, not a tourist setup, but the way people actually live there. This is where the day slows down enough to ask questions and sit with the routine of the place.
The final stretch crosses into the Agafay desert, the stone-and-scrub landscape that rises between the mountains and the plains. Here you ride a camel across it, then head back to Marrakech, arriving around 5:00 pm. The guide speaks English, Spanish or French, and the vehicle is air-conditioned for the long stretches of driving. Bottled water is included throughout.
