The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so far from Marrakech so quickly. One minute we were dodging scooters in the city, then suddenly it was all olive groves and that crisp mountain air — almost sweet, honestly. Our driver Khalid joked about my French (he was right), and before I knew it we’d stopped for a camel ride. The camels looked half asleep but somehow still managed to make me laugh — their eyelashes are ridiculous up close.

After that, we visited this women’s Argan oil cooperative. The smell inside was nutty and earthy — not what I imagined. One of the women showed us how they grind the kernels by hand. It’s slow work; her wrists must be strong as iron. We had mint tea with a Berber family just up the road — I tried to say thank you in Tamazight but mostly got smiles and nods back. There was something about sitting on those low cushions, the sound of kids playing outside, that made it feel like time slowed down.

The hike up into the Atlas Mountains started from Imlil. Our guide Youssef kept pointing out walnut trees and telling stories about growing up here (he claims he could run up these hills faster than any mule). The path was rocky but not too hard — you can get a mule if you want, but I stubbornly walked. Lunch was in someone’s home in Armed village: tagine with bread still warm from the fire. Honestly, I’m not sure if it was the view of Mt Toubkal or just being tired from walking, but that meal tasted different — richer somehow.

On the way back down we stopped at Naqab Waterfall. The spray felt cold on my face and there were wildflowers everywhere, even though it’s late spring already. By the time we drove through Ourika Valley heading back to Marrakech, everyone in the van had gone quiet — just watching the light shift over the hills. I still think about that silence sometimes.
