The Experience
Ever wondered what the desert smells like at dusk? I didn’t, not really, until we left Marrakech behind and the city noise faded into this quiet, sandy nothingness. Our driver—Youssef, I think—kept pointing out little villages as we bumped along. The air changed; it got cooler, almost sweet with dust and something herbal I couldn’t place. When we finally reached the edge of the Agafay Desert, there were camels waiting. Mine was called Mouna (the guide laughed when I asked if she had a favorite), and honestly, getting on was less graceful than I’d hoped. But once we started moving, it felt slow and gentle—just the sound of hooves crunching over pebbles and that weirdly comforting silence you only get far from cities.
The sun was already low when we reached the Berber camp. Someone handed me mint tea before I’d even sat down properly—hot, sweet, almost syrupy—and there was music drifting from somewhere behind the tents. Our host explained bits of Berber tradition while showing us these intricate leather drums; he let me try one but my rhythm was hopeless (he smiled anyway). Dinner came out in heavy clay dishes: tagine with lamb so tender it fell apart under my fork, plus salads with bright herbs and bread still warm from the fire. There’s something about eating outside in that fading light—with strangers who suddenly feel like friends—that makes everything taste sharper.
I didn’t expect to be so moved by the music after dinner. The musicians played old Berber songs—one of them sang with his eyes closed—and for a while nobody talked much. Then came this wild fire show; sparks flying up into a sky already thick with stars. It all felt a bit unreal, honestly. On the drive back to Marrakech I kept replaying that moment: just sitting there in the sand, hands sticky from dates, listening to laughter echo off empty hills. Still can’t decide if it was the food or that feeling of being so far away from everything that stuck with me most.
