The Experience
Ever wondered if the desert really goes silent at night? I did, right up until our driver steered us out of Marrakech’s chaos and into the open, stony hills of Agafay. The city faded quick — you could still smell the spices on your clothes, but suddenly there was just this big sky and a kind of hush that made my ears ring. Our guide, Youssef, handed me a blue scarf (“for the sun,” he said, even though it was already dipping low) and helped us up onto camels that looked only half interested in moving. My friend tried to name hers “Bob.” The camel didn’t care.
The sunset here isn’t like any I’ve seen — it’s not fiery, just this slow gold that turns everything ochre and soft. We rocked along quietly for maybe half an hour (no idea really — time gets weird out there), with the Atlas Mountains way off in the haze. There was mint tea waiting when we got down, sweet enough to make your teeth ache but honestly perfect after all that dust. I tried to say thank you in Arabic; Youssef laughed and repeated it back until I got close enough.
Dinner happened around a campfire — tagine bubbling somewhere behind us, smoke mixing with whatever wild herbs they’d thrown in. The musicians started up after dark fell properly; drums first, then voices that carried out across the stones. It felt less like a show and more like being let in on something old. At some point I stopped trying to take photos because none of it would come out right anyway. There was a moment where everyone just sat quiet, listening to nothing but wind — I still think about that.
