The Experience
The drive out of Marrakech is quick—less than an hour, but you feel the city slip away fast. Out here, the air’s drier and there’s a faint scent of wild herbs when you step off the van. Our guide, Youssef, handed us light scarves (helpful against the breeze) before we met the camels. They’re calm animals, with names like Momo and Atlas, and their handlers joke quietly in Darija as they help you up.
Riding through Agafay’s rocky dunes at sunset is nothing like the Sahara—no endless sand, but soft golden light over stony hills. I remember the crunch underfoot and how quiet it got except for distant laughter from another group. The sun drops fast here; one moment you’re squinting, next you’re wrapped in that cool desert dusk.
Dinner was set up under a low tent—cushions on carpets, lanterns flickering. We ate slow-cooked tagine with fresh bread while someone played a gnawa tune nearby. The food tasted richer after the ride; maybe it’s just the desert air or being hungry from laughing so much. Afterward, we lingered over mint tea before heading back to Marrakech—tired but happy.
