The Experience

We almost missed our pickup because I couldn’t find my sunglasses—classic. The driver just grinned when we finally tumbled out, apologizing. The drive from Marrakech to the Agafay Desert was only half an hour, but it felt like another world: dust swirling outside, the city noise fading fast. Our guide, Youssef, handed me a helmet and made some joke about “not racing the camels,” which I pretended to understand (my French is... not great). The quad bike felt heavier than I expected—my hands got all shaky on the handlebars at first, but after a few minutes I was grinning like an idiot as we zipped over rocky trails with that dry wind in my face.

I didn’t expect the quiet to hit so hard when we switched to camels. There was this gold light everywhere; even the shadows looked warm. My camel’s name was Malika—she kept turning her head back like she was checking if I was still there. Youssef pointed out some distant Berber tents and told us stories about his childhood here. It’s strange how you can feel so small and safe at the same time out in that open space. When we reached a little rise, we stopped just as the sun started sinking behind those pale hills—honestly, I still think about that view sometimes.

Dinner happened around a campfire with everyone sitting low on cushions. The tagine smelled sweet and spicy at once—cinnamon maybe? Or saffron? There were salads and couscous too, plus mint tea poured from way up high (I spilled half of mine trying to copy our host). Then came music—Gnaoua rhythms that made some people get up and dance, even though most of us just clapped along awkwardly. Someone tried the hookah; I passed but loved watching the smoke curl up into that cold night air. We left late, tired but wired somehow. Still had sand in my shoes when I got back to my hotel room.
