The experience

Rabat opens the journey: you'll explore the kasbah and medina before heading north to Chefchaouen, the blue city nestled in the Rif Mountains. The route passes Ras el-Maa Waterfall on the way in, and day two is yours to wander the medina and surrounding hills without a schedule. From Chefchaouen, the tour moves south through Volubilis toward Fes, where you overnight in a traditional riad and have the afternoon to walk the old city.

Day four is the long push south: from Fes through Ifrane (called the Switzerland of Morocco for its Alpine feel), and into the cedar forest where Barbarian apes live, then down the Ziz Valley toward Merzouga. You'll stop for views and pass through Berber villages before arriving at the desert camp at day's end. A glass of mint tea welcomes you, and then a camel ride carries you out to watch the sunset over the highest sand dunes in Morocco. The camp is well equipped, and you sleep there.

The next morning a camel guide wakes you for sunrise over Erg Chebbi (the dunes shift color as light changes), then you trek back to the riad for breakfast and a hot shower. After that, the route turns west toward Todgha Gorge, where you can hike the valley floor between the highest, narrowest gorge walls in Morocco. The evening takes you through Dades Valley, where the landscape opens into rock formations called "monkey toes" and sand castles rise from the earth. You stay in a riad or guesthouse in the gorge itself, with dinner and breakfast included.

The final day follows Dades Valley west through Kalaat M'Gouna (the rose city, where you can buy rosewater), and into Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Africa for its film studios and kasbahs. Lunch happens at Ait Benhaddou, the largest kasbah in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage site that has stood in for ancient worlds in films like Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator. From there, the Tizi n'Tichka pass carries you over the High Atlas at 2,260 meters, with a stop at women's cooperatives to see how argan oil is made, before you arrive in Marrakech.

What's included in the 6-day tour from Casablanca?

The tour includes an air-conditioned vehicle for all transfers, all accommodations from Casablanca through Marrakech, a local guide in Fes and a desert guide in Merzouga, a camel ride at sunset and sunrise over the Sahara, and one night in the desert camp with dinner and breakfast. Breakfast is included each morning. Dinner is provided in the desert camp and in Dades Valley, but not in Chefchaouen or Fes.

What is Erg Chebbi and what do you do there?

Erg Chebbi is the highest sand dune field in Morocco, located near Merzouga in the Sahara Desert. You ride a camel out into the dunes to watch the sunset on your first evening, then return to the desert camp. The next morning, your camel guide wakes you early to watch the sunrise over the same dunes (the light changes the color of the sand as the day breaks) before you trek back to the riad for breakfast.

How does the route get from Fes to the Sahara?

From Fes, the tour heads south through Ifrane and the cedar forest, where you may see Barbarian apes, then descends the Ziz Valley with stops for views along the way. You pass through Berber villages and the town of Erfoud before arriving in Merzouga at the edge of the Sahara Desert at the end of the day.

What are Todgha Gorge and Dades Valley like?

Todgha Gorge holds the highest and narrowest gorge walls in Morocco, and you have time to hike along the valley floor. Dades Valley, which follows, is known as the way of a thousand kasbahs for the numerous fortified structures dotting the landscape. The valley also features dramatic rock formations called "monkey toes" and sand castles rising from the earth.

What happens on the free day in Chefchaouen?

Day two is entirely yours to explore the blue city at your own pace. You can walk the medina, visit the surrounding area, and spend as much time as you want in the narrow blue-painted streets and plazas. You stay at the same riad both nights, so there's no packing or moving.
