The experience
The route leaves Casablanca and heads north to Chefchaouen, where you have a free day to wander the winding lanes and narrow alleys of the medina: the streets lined with souks selling woollen goods, embroidery and local goat cheese found nowhere else in Morocco. Late afternoon you drive three and a half hours to Fes, arriving by evening. The next day is a guided tour of Fez el Bali, the oldest section of the city, where more than 9,000 narrow streets and alleys surround the University of Al-Karaouine, founded in AD 859 and still operating today. This is the largest medina in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Day four is a long drive south through changing landscapes: the modern, green town of Ifrane in the Middle Atlas at 1,665 meters altitude (nicknamed little Switzerland), then down through Berber villages and the Ziz Valley before reaching Merzouga. In the evening you ride a camel for about an hour and a half into the red sand dunes of Erg Chebbi to watch the sunset, then spend the night in a Berber tented desert camp with dinner and breakfast included. If you wake early, you can see the sunrise over the dunes before heading back.
The return journey crosses the great canyons of the High Atlas: the Todra Gorges, where you can hike among the high plateaus and peaks, then the Dades Gorges. You pass through the Valley of Roses with its alfalfa, olive and fig trees, then travel the road of 1,000 Kasbahs to Ouarzazate. A guided tour of the Kasbah Amridil is included, followed by a visit to the fortified Aït Ben Haddou, built in the 11th century and a UNESCO site since 1987. The final stretch crosses the Tizi-n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters with views of Berber villages and mountain peaks before arriving in Marrakech by evening.
