The experience

The route starts on the Atlantic coast and moves inland through the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, where you'll have a morning to explore the town's narrow blue-painted streets before the drive to Fes. Day three is devoted entirely to Fes: the Medina of Fez is the oldest city in Morocco, and the itinerary takes you past the Royal Palace gate, through the Jewish Quarter, and to Al Karaouine University, the oldest university in the region, with time to wander on your own and visit the Attarine Museum and Mulay Idriss Mausoleum.

The journey then turns south toward the desert. You'll pass through Ifrane and the cedar forest of Azrou, where Barbary Monkeys live, then descend into the Ziz Valley before arriving in Merzouga. Here you trade the vehicle for a camel and ride into the dunes to watch the sunset, then spend the night at a traditional desert camp with music and a fire. The next morning, you leave the Sahara and drive through Rissani's market toward the Todra and Dades Gorges, where the landscape shifts to dramatic canyon walls and you can choose to hike for an hour and visit a Berber family to learn their way of life.

The final day carries you west through southern Morocco's kasbahs (Amridil, Ait Ben Haddou, Telouet), and over the Tichka Pass in the High Atlas Mountains, passing Berber villages and changing terrain until you reach Marrakech. Private transportation and an air-conditioned vehicle are included throughout. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French depending on your preference.
