The Experience

The minibus picks you up before dawn from your Marrakech riad and climbs toward the High Atlas. Within an hour the city noise is gone and you're watching the valleys open up — terraced fields, scattered stone houses, the peaks getting closer. Your local guide meets you in Imlil, a village tucked into Toubkal National Park, and from there the real walk begins. The trail to Jbel Tasghimout doesn't feel like a slog; it's steep enough to feel earned but not so brutal that you're counting switchbacks. The summit sits at 2,660 meters and the view from up there — other peaks, the valleys dropping away, villages the size of your thumb — is the kind of thing that stays with you.

You descend back to Imlil in the afternoon and sleep in a traditional riad that night, the kind of place where the walls are thick and the rooms are simple and warm. Dinner is Moroccan food made in the kitchen downstairs, and you eat it knowing exactly where most of it came from. The next morning, after breakfast, you walk through the Berber villages around Imlil — not a tour-bus stop, just a walk where you see how people actually live, the terraces they've built, the rhythm of the place. Then the hike to Imlil Waterfalls, which sounds grander than it is but is genuinely pleasant, surrounded by walnut trees and fields. Lunch happens in a local home, cooked by someone's family, and it's the kind of meal that tastes different when you're eating it where it was made.

The afternoon is the long return to Marrakech. You cross the Kik Plateau — the views here are wide and strange, Lake Lalla Takerkoust visible in the distance — and then drop into the Agafay Desert, which looks nothing like the sand dunes you might picture. It's rocky, mineral-colored, almost lunar, and it sits right there in contrast to the mountains you just came down from. The minibus gets you back to your hotel or riad in Marrakech by late afternoon, and you're done.
