The experience

Errachidia airport is the closest entry point to the Sahara, which is why this tour picks you up there and drives you straight to your hotel to settle in before the adventure starts. The next morning, after breakfast, you head south through the Ziz Valley (a palm-lined oasis that breaks up the desert approach), and stop to take in the view before continuing to Erfoud. Erfoud sits on top of a 500-million-year-old seabed, and the marble workshops on its outskirts are stacked with fossils: trilobites, ammonites and other specimens pulled from the stone. Lunch happens at Maison Boutchrafine, then the road opens into the Sahara proper.

The second day is the heart of it. You wake early in the desert camp to watch the sun come up from the top of the dunes, eat breakfast, and trek back to meet your driver for a full day of exploration. First stop is Khamlia, a Berber village where local musicians perform Gnaoua music. You watch and listen, not just pass through. Then you drive offroad to see nomad encampments under their tents and experience the open desert landscape. By evening you're back in Errachidia for the night.

The third day is the return: you catch your flight out in the morning. Private transportation and an air-conditioned vehicle run the whole route, and breakfast and dinner are provided each day. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and one additional language.
