The experience

The trip starts at 8 a.m. with private taxi pickup from your Errachidia hotel or airport. On the drive to Merzouga, you stop briefly at Ziz Valley for photos, then switch to a private 4WD vehicle once you arrive in the desert. Your guide takes you to Khamlia village to meet nomads and listen to Gnawa music, followed by a berber pizza lunch. In the afternoon, you trade the jeep for camels (your camelmen show you how to mount), and ride about an hour into the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi to reach the camp. You watch the sunset over the dunes, try sandboarding, then settle into your private luxury tent with its own bathroom.

Dinner comes with berber music and a campfire. The next morning, you wake early to watch the sunrise from the dunes, eat breakfast, then choose your return: camel or jeep back to Merzouga village. Your private taxi then drives you back to Errachidia, or if you booked the Errachidia-to-Fes option, continues onward to Fes instead. The camp provides electricity to charge phones, and bottled water, tea, and a desert scarf come with the camel ride.
