The experience
The tour leaves Errachidia at 2pm and takes two hours to reach Merzouga, with a stop for pictures at the panoramic overlook of Ziz Valley on the way. Once you arrive at the desert camp in the late afternoon, you choose your entry: a one-hour camel trek or a jeep ride into the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Either way, you end the day at a berber camp nestled between the sand, where you'll walk to watch the sunset, eat dinner with live berber music, and sleep in a private tent equipped with a bathroom, shower, toilet and towels.
The second morning starts before dawn so you can climb the dunes and watch the sunrise, then return to the camp for berber breakfast. You'll ride back out by camel or jeep (you can switch your choice from day one if you prefer), transfer to the vehicle, and drive back to Errachidia, arriving around midday. Your private driver speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French and stays with you both days. Sand boarding is available at the camp if you want it, and the camp has electricity to charge phones.
Luggage travels with the transport, so you don't carry it yourself. Scarves, tea and bottled water are provided. The tents sleep two, three, four or five people, and you book based on your group size. Lunches and extra drinks are on your own, but the main meals and all transport are covered.
