The experience
You arrive at Errachidia Airport and your driver picks you up for the direct route south. The first stop is an elevated viewpoint over the Ziz Valley: a sea of thousands of date palms carved through deep orange limestone canyons, one of North Africa's most famous oasis landscapes. You pass through Erfoud, known as the "Gate of the Sahara" for its fossilized marble, and reach Merzouga by late afternoon, a village nestled at the foot of Erg Chebbi's monumental sand dunes. That evening you have the pool and a traditional Moroccan dinner at your hotel.
Day two starts around 10am with a stop in Khamlia, a village of Gnawa musicians whose ancestors migrated from Sub-Saharan Africa. You'll hear traditional Saharan music and rhythms. Next is a nearby oasis where you can see how locals manage water in the desert, then Rissani, the historical first capital of the Alaouite Dynasty, where you wander through a bustling souk selling spices, handwoven crafts and livestock. In the afternoon you head into Erg Chebbi's dunes, check into the traditional desert camp, and spend the evening on a camel ride across the golden sand, watching the sunset, eating a traditional Saharan dinner, and gathering around the campfire for live Berber drumming under a canopy of stars.
Day three begins with an early wake to photograph the sunrise over Erg Chebbi, then breakfast at camp before heading north toward the Todra Gorges. Here the High Atlas Mountains drop dramatically into a deep limestone canyon where sheer rock faces rise 300 meters on either side of a cold river. You'll have time to walk the narrowest sections and take photos. You then wind through the Dades Valley along roads carved into red cliffs, passing ancient kasbahs, striking rock formations called the "monkey fingers," and traditional clay Berber villages. By evening you're in Ouarzazate, the cinematic capital of Morocco, where you stay at a local hotel.
On the final day, breakfast is around 10am. You can visit the Atlas Film Studios (entrance around 110 MAD, optional, you can stay in the vehicle), then drive to the UNESCO-listed Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient fortified clay and stone village where you'll have lunch and time to explore the winding alleyways and climb to the granary for panoramic views. The route then crosses the High Atlas through the Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters, with photo stops along the way for mountain peaks, terraced fields, and traditional villages. You arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon, typically around 6pm. If your hotel is in the car-free Medina, your driver drops you at Jemaa el-Fnaa Square or the closest accessible point.
