The experience
The tour starts at a meeting point in Kotor and immediately climbs the Old Austro-Hungarian road, a historic route with 25 serpentines that winds up Lovcen mountain. Each turn lifts you higher above the Bay of Kotor, and the road itself is the draw: the engineering and the views compound as you ascend. Before reaching the summit, you pass through Njeguši, a village perched on the mountainside where you can stop for local smoked ham, cheese, honey and rakija if you want them.
At the top of Lovcen National Park, 1,660 meters up, stands a mausoleum and a panoramic view called the Sea of Rocks. Entry to the peak and mausoleum costs 8 euros per person and is optional. You pay on arrival. From there the route follows a forest road down to Cetinje, the old royal capital, where you walk through the town center and have free time to explore at your own pace: the Orthodox monastery, five museums and galleries, or a café. The city has slowed since its 15th-century peak, but that quietness is part of what makes it readable.
The final leg takes you to Skadar Lake, the Balkans' largest lake and a national park. Pavlova Strana is a viewpoint on the lake's edge with some of the most photographed views in Montenegro. Rijeka Crnojevića, a riverside town on the Crnojević River, sits at the heart of the lake region. Here, optional activities open up: lunch at a traditional restaurant overlooking the water, a 45-minute to one-hour boat ride across the lake, or a walk through the surrounding natural areas. On the return drive along the coast, you stop to photograph St. Stefan, the former fishing island turned luxury hotel. The late afternoon light and the drive back to Kotor close the day.

What is the Old Austro-Hungarian road and why does it matter on this tour?
The Old Austro-Hungarian road is the historic route that climbs Lovcen mountain with 25 serpentines, each curve offering wider views of the Bay of Kotor. It is the spine of the tour because the road itself (its engineering and the vistas it reveals) is what makes the ascent distinctive. You are not just reaching a summit, you are traveling a landmark route.
Can I eat and drink during the tour, or do I need to bring my own?
Food and drinks are optional throughout the tour. At Njeguši village on the mountainside, you can sample local smoked ham, cheese, mountain honey and rakija. At Skadar Lake, you can arrange lunch at a traditional restaurant with a lake view in advance. Any meal or drink can be organized before you book if you let the guide know.
Is the boat ride on Skadar Lake included, or is it extra?
The boat ride is optional and costs extra. It runs 45 minutes to one hour across Skadar Lake, the Balkans' largest lake, and departs from Rijeka Crnojevića. You decide at the time whether to take it, or you can walk the surrounding natural areas instead.
How much does it cost to enter the mausoleum at the top of Lovcen?
Entry to the peak and mausoleum at Lovcen National Park costs 8 euros per person, paid directly on arrival. It is optional. You can view the Sea of Rocks viewpoint without entering the mausoleum itself.
What is St. Stefan and why do we stop there on the way back?
St. Stefan is a former fishing island on the Montenegrin coast that is now a luxury hotel town. The tour stops there on the return drive to photograph it against the late afternoon light. It is one of the most recognizable views on the coast and sits between Skadar Lake and Kotor.
