The Experience

First thing I noticed was the way the light hit Kotor’s walls—sort of gold but also dusty, like someone forgot to clean the air. Our driver, Marko, grinned when we piled into his van (air conditioning already humming), and before I knew it we were climbing those 25 crazy serpentines out of town. My stomach did a little dance on each curve—don’t eat breakfast too fast if you get carsick. But the views? You see all of Kotor Bay twisting below and it makes you forget your nerves for a second.

We stopped in Njegusi just as someone was hanging fresh laundry outside—smelled like woodsmoke and mountain air mixed together. Marko introduced us to his aunt (she runs the kitchen here) and she handed over slices of prosciutto that tasted salty and sweet at once. The cheese was crumbly, bread still warm. We tried local wine—red, sharp—and Marko joked that if we finished the bottle we’d have to help with chores. The road up to Lovcen got even quieter after that. Rocks everywhere, sky huge above us.
