Montenegro’s wild roads, Njegusi flavors & Budva’s old stones

You’ll wind up mountain roads from Kotor with a local guide, taste homemade prosciutto and cheese in Njegusi village, stand above the clouds at Lovcen’s mausoleum, and stroll Budva’s old streets before returning home full (literally). The moments linger—especially that first bite of bread or the quiet at the top of Lovcen.

6h

Step-by-step itinerary

The Experience

First thing I noticed was the way the light hit Kotor’s walls—sort of gold but also dusty, like someone forgot to clean the air. Our driver, Marko, grinned when we piled into his van (air conditioning already humming), and before I knew it we were climbing those 25 crazy serpentines out of town. My stomach did a little dance on each curve—don’t eat breakfast too fast if you get carsick. But the views? You see all of Kotor Bay twisting below and it makes you forget your nerves for a second.

We stopped in Njegusi just as someone was hanging fresh laundry outside—smelled like woodsmoke and mountain air mixed together. Marko introduced us to his aunt (she runs the kitchen here) and she handed over slices of prosciutto that tasted salty and sweet at once. The cheese was crumbly, bread still warm. We tried local wine—red, sharp—and Marko joked that if we finished the bottle we’d have to help with chores. I tried to say “thank you” in Montenegrin; everyone laughed but I think they appreciated the effort.

The road up to Lovcen got even quieter after that. Rocks everywhere, sky huge above us. The mausoleum is perched so high it almost feels like you’re floating when you look out—windy too, so bring a jacket even if it’s sunny in Kotor. Inside it was cool and echoey; our guide told stories about Petar II Petrovic Njegos that made me wish I’d paid more attention in history class. I still think about that silence up there—the kind where nobody wants to talk for a minute.

Budva was our last stop—old stones underfoot, blue shutters everywhere, kids chasing pigeons around the square. We wandered through narrow lanes with just enough time for an ice cream before heading back to Kotor. It wasn’t rushed but also not slow; just right for seeing a lot without feeling like you missed what matters most.

What’s included

Your day includes pickup in Kotor by air-conditioned vehicle with WiFi onboard. At Njegusi village you'll be served homemade prosciutto, cheese and bread alongside bottled water plus your choice of local wine or beer—all before wandering Budva’s old town and returning later that afternoon.
