The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound — not engine noise, but that odd hush as we rolled out of Kotor Old Town in these tiny electric Topolinos. Our guide, Milan, waved us forward from his motorbike like he was leading a parade. The bay was glassy and blue, and you could smell salt and some kind of wildflowers (maybe sage?) blowing in from the hills. I kept glancing at my friend in the passenger seat — neither of us had ever driven anything this small or this cheerful-looking. People on the promenade smiled at us as we passed, which felt funny but also kind of nice.

We hugged the coast for what must’ve been 45 minutes, winding past old stone houses and boats bobbing near the shore. Milan stopped now and then for photos — he pointed out a church where his grandfather got married, which made me wish I spoke more Montenegrin so I could ask him about it properly. The sun was already hot by the time we reached Perast. There’s this sleepy feeling there, like everyone’s just finished lunch and is about to nap. We wandered along the water for an hour, poking into little churches (the bells sounded almost too big for such a quiet place) and watching ferries shuttle people out to those two islands. I tried to order coffee in Serbian; the waiter grinned and answered in perfect English.

The drive back took us through Ljuta — blink and you’ll miss it — then down toward Dobrota where Milan let us stop again for pictures. There was a breeze coming off the bay that smelled faintly of diesel mixed with pine needles (not unpleasant, just real). At one point a local kid waved at our convoy; I waved back without thinking. The whole thing felt relaxed but also sort of special because you’re actually driving yourself along this crazy-beautiful stretch instead of just staring out a bus window. I didn’t expect that part to stick with me.
