The experience
How do you get to see Przewalski's wild horses, a species that vanished from the wild and was brought back through reintroduction? Khustai National Park, about 100 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar, is where that happened. The 2-day tour picks you up and drives you out in a 4WD SUV with a professional guide who knows where the herds move through the forest-steppe. You stay overnight at a nomadic family home, which puts you there for the early hours when the Takhi are most active. The park also holds red deer, marmots and other wildlife, so the wildlife watching runs through both days.
Day one is the drive to Khustai and the first wildlife viewing. Day two starts with breakfast, then more time in the park before you head back toward Ulaanbaatar. On the return route, you stop at the Moltsog sand dunes, which sit in the same forest-steppe zone and break up the drive back to the city. The guide handles the route and the timing. You bring binoculars and patience for the animals to appear.

Is this one for you?The tour runs two full days with most time spent in the vehicle watching for wildlife, so it suits travelers who want to see the Takhi without hiking or early-morning treks on foot. If you prefer a shorter day trip or a more active experience with walking, the 1-day options from Ulaanbaatar may fit better.

What exactly are Takhi horses and why is Khustai the place to see them?
Takhi, also called Przewalski's wild horses, were hunted to extinction in the wild by the early 1900s. Khustai National Park was established in 1992 to reintroduce them from zoo populations, and today several hundred roam the park. They are stockier and darker than domestic horses, with a distinctive upright mane.
