The experience
The day starts at the Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue Complex, a 40-meter stainless steel figure built in 2008 to mark the eight-hundredth anniversary of the Mongolian Empire. The statue weighs 250 tons and holds the title of the world's tallest equestrian sculpture. Inside the complex are souvenir shops, a small museum, a restaurant, and a coffee shop. You can also rent traditional Mongolian clothes for photos if you want, or pay extra to photograph with an eagle handler.
From there, the drive takes you into Terelj National Park, where granite cliffs rise above forests and rivers. After lunch, you'll explore Turtle Rock and the surrounding area before heading to Aryabal Temple. The temple sits in a landscape of granite formations and scenic valleys. It was built in the shape of an elephant's head and named for a Buddhist deity believed to listen to prayers. The path to the temple has 108 steps, a number considered auspicious in Buddhism, and signs along the way display 144 Buddhist teachings in English and Mongolian.
The horse riding comes next: one hour with a professional horseman who leads your horse through the park. If you want to ride longer or shorter, you can adjust the time when you book. Afterward, you return to Ulaanbaatar with your driver, who speaks English and handles all the logistics of the day.
