The experience
The day starts early with a 60-minute drive to Tequisquiapan for a vegetarian-friendly breakfast buffet, then a two-hour journey to Tolantongo. You'll spend the first two hours in the pocitos (naturally warm thermal pools carved into the mountainside) before moving to the main event: a turquoise river fed by thermal springs where you can float and relax for another two hours. The water stays warm year-round, and the setting is open enough to photograph without crowds.
After lunch by the river (pre-ordered from a local menu and eaten at tables set up on the banks), you wade into the cave system for an hour of exploration. Your guide carries a headlamp and leads you through tunnels where warm water flows from inside the mountain, past interior waterfalls, to the spring source itself. The origin point that gives Tolantongo its name, meaning "place of warm moving water." You'll swim in a warm pool inside the caves before heading back out. Cave and river access depend on weather conditions in the days before your visit. The operator postpones if conditions are unsafe.
The return journey includes a 90-minute drive to Huichapan for a restroom and stretch break, then a final two hours back to San Miguel de Allende. You'll travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with blanket and pillow, and receive end-of-day snacks for the ride home. Gear is provided: a small backpack, water bottle, sport towel, headlamp, cell phone waterproof case, toilet paper, wet wipes, a bag for wet clothes, soap, shampoo, and sunscreen. Water shoes can be brought from home, rented for 70 Mexican pesos, or purchased for 180 Mexican pesos. Zip-lining from the pools to the river costs 250 Mexican pesos if you choose it.
