The experience
The tour leaves from Querétaro in an air-conditioned vehicle and runs for ten hours total. Your guide meets you at one of three pickup points (outside the perimeter, within the perimeter, or at a designated meeting point), and stays with you throughout the day. The guide speaks English or Spanish and can answer questions about the site's history, legends and local traditions as you explore.
At Tolantongo Caves, your entry ticket opens access to both park areas: Paradise Hidden and The Grotto. You move through a grotto and tunnel, wade and swim in river pools fed by thermal springs, hike to waterfalls, and cross a suspension bridge that spans the canyon. The thermal pools let you soak in warm water surrounded by rock walls and flowing water. Hiking trails connect the major stops, so you're on your feet for stretches of the day. Bring a swimsuit, water shoes (sandals don't work on wet rock) and a towel to dry off between sections.
The tour suits all fitness levels, though the terrain is uneven and wet. Bring cash if you want to buy souvenirs at the site. Your guide can help you find vendors. Children from age one are welcome. The minimum group size is two people. If fewer than two book, the tour is cancelled and your payment refunded.

Is this one for you?Choose a pickup location within or outside the Querétaro perimeter, or meet the group at the designated point, depending on where you're staying and how early you can get to the departure hub. The ten-hour length means you're in the caves and on the trails for most of the day, so plan to be off your feet by evening.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (11 to 17 years); Child (4 to 10 years); Infant (1 to 3 years).
What's actually inside Tolantongo Caves that I'll see?
The park includes a grotto and tunnel you walk through, river pools where the thermal water flows, hiking trails that connect the major spots, a suspension bridge crossing the canyon, and waterfalls you can reach on foot. Both park areas (Paradise Hidden and The Grotto) are open to you with your entry ticket.
Can I swim in the thermal pools, or are they just for looking at?
You swim in the thermal pools. Bring a swimsuit and water shoes. The rocks are slippery when wet. You'll soak in warm water in multiple spots throughout the day as part of the tour.
How does pickup work if I'm staying in San Miguel de Allende instead of Querétaro?
The tour departs from Querétaro. You can choose pickup outside the perimeter, within the perimeter, or meet the group at a designated meeting point. If you're based in San Miguel de Allende, you'll need to arrange your own transport to one of the Querétaro pickup locations.
What should I bring besides a swimsuit and towel?
Water shoes are required: sandals won't grip wet rock. Bring cash if you want to buy souvenirs at the site. Your guide can point you to vendors. Sunscreen, a hat and a light layer are useful for the hiking sections. Lunch and breakfast are not included, so pack snacks or plan to eat before or after the tour.
