The van leaves Querétaro early, and within an hour you're standing at the Peña de Bernal—a massive rock formation that rises out of the valley floor like something that shouldn't fit. The real stop is the Mirador de Cristal, where the Sierra Gorda spreads out in front of you in a way that photographs don't quite capture. After that comes the Cavern of the Jew—a cave system you walk into, and the guide explains the geology and the local history without rushing you through it. There's a photo stop somewhere in here that people request every time, and you'll see why when you get there. Then the van climbs higher into a mining town surrounded by pine trees, and if you're lucky with the weather, fog rolls in and changes everything. The hike to Chuveje Waterfall is the centerpiece. You walk upstream for maybe 45 minutes, following the water as it gets louder, and then you're standing in front of the cascade. The pool at the base is cold and clear, and if you brought a change of clothes like the guide suggested, you can get in. If the waterfall is closed for any reason, the hike goes to El Cedral instead—same kind of walk, different destination.
