You make the food, not watch someone else make it.
Tierra Maya is a hands-on class in Cozumel where you learn and practice living Mayan traditions in a jungle sanctuary. You grind cacao on volcanic stone, press tortillas on a traditional comal, crush fresh salsa in a molcajete, and taste Melipona stingless bee honey and regional liqueurs. Step-by-step itinerary
Experience living Mayan traditions
- Meet native stingless bees
- Grind sacred cacao on stone
- Press tortillas by hand
- Crush fresh salsa in molcajete
- Taste rare honey and regional liquors
The experience
Tierra Maya sits in the jungle outside the cruise-port crowds, built around the idea that you don't watch culture. You practice it. The class runs two hours and moves through four stations, each one a skill still used in rural Maya communities. A local guide leads the group through each one in English or Spanish, and you handle the tools and ingredients yourself.
At the Mayan Kitchen, you press a fresh tortilla on a traditional comal and grind salsa ingredients in a volcanic stone molcajete, learning why corn held sacred meaning for the Maya. The Cacao Station has you grinding roasted cacao on a stone metate the way it was prepared for centuries as a ceremonial drink. You meet the Melipona stingless bees kept on the sanctuary grounds and taste their rare honey. The experience ends with regional liqueurs found only in the Yucatán jungle, each one tied to local heritage.
Bottled water comes with the class. Children from age three are welcome, though the sanctuary notes that the hands-on work and physical movement suit travelers with at least moderate fitness. The whole thing is built to keep these traditions alive through practice, not performance.
