The experience

Our driver picks you up from your Guadalajara hotel early, and within an hour you're standing in the agave fields outside Amatitán, the landscape rolling green and geometric, rows of blue agave plants stretching toward the horizon. The first stop is Tequila Selecto, one of the last truly artisan factories left: small enough that you're not herded through with fifty other tourists, but big enough to show you how the whole thing works. You walk through the production floor, see the ovens, the fermentation tanks, taste what comes out the other end. It's the kind of place where the person showing you around actually knows the family who owns it, and you feel that difference.

Then you head into the town of Tequila itself, where the streets are narrow and the main square is lined with colonial buildings and shops selling bottles you've never heard of. You've got free time here to wander, grab lunch at the municipal market if you want, or just stand around taking photos of the agave landscape. After that comes La Fortaleza Distillery, where you choose between two experiences ("Vive Abuelo" or "Viva Bisabuelo"), both of which walk you through the bottling area, the cork workshop, and the aging cellar. The tasting happens in the old maturation caves, four expressions of their tequila, and the whole thing takes on a different weight when you're tasting in a room that's been aging spirits for decades. The "Vive Abuelo" tour also includes a return visit to Tequila Selecto, so you're not just seeing industrial production. You're seeing both sides.

Before heading back to Guadalajara, the driver stops at Los Cantaritos El Güero de Amatitán, a stand that's been making the same drink the same way for years: tequila, lemon, orange, grapefruit juice, all poured into a traditional clay pitcher and served as a shot.
