The Experience
“Try this one — it’s from Amatitán, not Tequila,” said our guide, Fernanda, as she handed me a little glass that caught the morning light. I’d never really thought about where tequila comes from before this day trip from Guadalajara, but standing in those endless blue-green agave fields outside Amatitán, you can’t help but feel it. The air was dry and sweet, a bit earthy. There was this low hum from the cicadas and someone in the distance was singing off-key. Fernanda showed us how the jimadores cut the agave hearts — she even let me hold a chunk. It was heavier than I expected, sticky with sap that smelled like rain on warm stone.
The drive between stops was all laughter and stories (and yes, drinks — they don’t leave you thirsty). At the tequila factory, we learned way more than I thought possible about distilling — there’s an art to it that feels almost old-fashioned. We tasted blanco first, then reposado with a slice of orange dusted in chili salt. The pairing made everything brighter somehow. I tried to say “gracias” with my best accent; Fernanda grinned and corrected me gently. She introduced us to Don Luis, who’s been making tequila here for decades — his hands were stained blue at the edges from years of agave work.
After that came the viewpoint over Tequila Volcano and more tasting (I lost count). The view just sort of settles into you — wide sky, rows of agave like brushstrokes all the way down the valley. Lunch break in Tequila itself was loose: we wandered cobbled streets, poked into shops selling clay mugs and sweets I still can’t pronounce. The sun was sharp overhead but everyone moved slow, like they knew how to handle it better than us city folks.
Last stop: Cantaritos “El Güero.” It’s loud there — music bouncing off painted walls, people shouting orders for cantaritos (tequila with citrus juice in big clay cups). Someone at our table started singing along badly and nobody cared. My hands were sticky from lime juice and I didn’t want to leave yet. That feeling stuck with me on the ride back — something about sharing drinks with strangers who don’t stay strangers for long out here.
