Watch agave get harvested, then taste tequila straight from the still

You get picked up from your Guadalajara hotel and driven to the agave fields to watch the traditional harvest, then visit a working distillery where you taste tequila at three stages of production. If you choose the Jose Cuervo option, you'll tour their facility and taste their tequila too. You have free time to eat lunch in town (at your own cost) before returning to Guadalajara by evening.

Step-by-step itinerary

Tequila distillery and town visit

  • Visit agave fields and watch Jima demonstration
  • Tour traditional tequila distillery and taste agave
  • Explore Jose Cuervo Distillery and taste tequila
  • Enjoy free time in Tequila town and shop
  • Eat typical food at Mercado or restaurant

The Experience

The bus picks you up from your Guadalajara hotel and heads west toward Tequila, a town about an hour away in Jalisco. Once you arrive, you start in the agave fields themselves—not just looking at them from a distance, but watching a local worker demonstrate the jima, the traditional technique for cutting the heart out of a blue agave plant. It's the kind of detail that stays with you: the size of the plant, the angle of the blade, how fast it actually happens. After that, you walk into a traditional distillery right there in town.

Inside the distillery, a guide walks you through the whole process—boiling the agave, fermentation, distillation—and you taste it at each stage. You get to taste the cooked agave itself, which is sweeter than you'd expect, then the raw first distillation, and finally the finished tequila ready for sale. If you've booked the Jose Cuervo option, you'll head to their distillery next and spend another hour learning their specific methods and tasting their lineup. That choice does mean less free time in town afterward, so it's worth thinking about what matters more to you.

After the distillery visit (or visits), you have free time in the Magic Town of Tequila. The Mercado Cleofas Mota is the main market if you want lunch—it's local and cheap—or there are restaurants scattered around town. You can browse tequila shops, grab a bite, or just walk around. The whole day runs from pickup to drop-off in downtown Guadalajara, either the Expo zone, Minerva roundabout, or the downtown zone, depending on where you're staying. Transport is air-conditioned the whole way, and the guide speaks both English and Spanish.
