The experience
The day starts at Guachimontones, an archaeological site near a small town in Jalisco, where a local guide walks you through the circular pyramid structures and explains the history of the region's first settlers. You'll also visit the Teuchitlán museum to see artifacts and learn more about the people who built these distinctive round ceremonial centers, which have no equivalent elsewhere in western Mexico.
From there, you head to La Rojeña, José Cuervo's flagship distillery and the oldest in Latin America. A tour of the facility shows you the tequila production process from agave to bottle. The educational tasting happens in the Experto Tequilero rooms, where you'll sample the company's Traditional, silver, reposado and añejo varieties, finishing with their premium Reserva de la Familia. This tasting is included with the tour.
The afternoon takes you through the agave fields of El Arenal District, where you can stop whenever you like to photograph the landscape. You'll also visit Los Cantaritos El Güero de Amatitán, a local drink stand known for cantaritos: refreshing shots of tequila, lemon, orange and grapefruit juice served in traditional clay pitchers. Free time in the town of Tequila lets you browse the main square and portals for local handicrafts or additional bottles before heading back.

Is this one for you? This tour works best if you're staying in Guadalajara or the surrounding area without a rental car, since private transport handles the full day and you don't need to navigate between the archaeological site, two distilleries, and the agave fields yourself. The fixed six to seven hour window fits a single day, and the ability to adjust stops means you can linger at Guachimontones or the agave landscape without throwing off the schedule.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
What exactly is at Guachimontones that makes it different from other archaeological sites?
Guachimontones is known for its circular pyramid structures, which are unique to western Mexico. Most pre-Hispanic pyramids in Mexico are built in a rectangular or square form, but these ceremonial centers are arranged in concentric circles, a distinctive architectural style you'll see as you walk the site with a local guide.
How does the tequila tasting work at La Rojeña?
The tasting takes place in the Experto Tequilero rooms and is led by a professional. You'll sample José Cuervo's Traditional, silver, reposado and añejo tequilas, and finish with their premium Reserva de la Familia. The tasting is included with the tour and designed to teach you how to distinguish between the different styles and ages.
Can I adjust the itinerary or take my time at certain stops?
Yes. The tour is private, so you can edit the route and set your own pace. You can stop in the agave fields whenever you want to take photos, and you have free time in the town of Tequila to explore at your own speed.
What's included in the tour price?
Private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, a guide in English or Spanish, the distillery tour at La Rojeña, and the professional tequila tasting are all included. Pickup is arranged as part of the booking.
