The experience
The day starts with pickup at your Mexico City hotel in a private vehicle. Your guide meets you there and travels with you the whole way, speaking English or Spanish depending on what you choose at checkout. The first stop is Tula, about an hour north, where the Toltec civilization built one of Mesoamerica's most influential cities in the 8th century. You'll see the Atlantes (monumental caryatids carved from basaltic stone, each roughly five meters tall) standing as representations of elite warriors. The ceremonial precinct also holds the Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl, the Great Pyramid, the Palacio Quemado (a flat-roofed structure supported by pillars), the ball court, and the Coatepantli, a serpent wall decorated with carved stone.
From Tula you continue to Teotihuacan, the sprawling pre-Columbian city that once rivaled Rome in size and influence. You walk the Causeway of the Dead, the avenue that connects the temple of Quetzalcoatl with the Pyramid of the Moon and the Pyramid of the Sun. Both pyramids are climbable, and the views from the top stretch across the entire complex. Your guide points out the ceremonial structures and explains how the city was laid out and what each zone was used for. Entry to both archaeological zones is included, so you don't stop to buy tickets.
Lunch is included in the option you select at checkout. If you choose the version without it, you'll have time to eat on your own during the tour. Bottled water is provided throughout the day. The return to your hotel wraps up the experience after roughly six to eight hours away, depending on traffic and how long you spend at each site.
