The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how quiet it felt standing in front of the Pyramid of the Sun, even with other visitors scattered around. Our guide, Javier, handed me a bottle of water and grinned — “climb if you want, or just sit here.” We’d left Mexico City early (I think it was barely 8am), but already the light made everything look sort of golden and dusty. The steps were steeper than I expected; halfway up, I stopped to catch my breath and watched a group of school kids racing each other. It smelled faintly like warm stone and sunscreen. Honestly, I didn’t rush — nobody hurried us.

After exploring Teotihuacan at our own pace (Javier told stories about the Avenue of the Dead that still stick in my head), we drove over to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It’s massive — bigger than I imagined — and people were lighting candles everywhere. There was this hush inside, but outside you could hear street vendors calling out for tamales. Javier explained why this place matters so much in Mexico’s history; I tried repeating “Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe” but definitely mangled it. He laughed, which made it easier somehow.

I liked that there was no tight schedule — we could linger as long as we wanted at both spots. Snacks appeared in the car (some kind of sweet bread?), and bottled water kept coming. It’s little things like that which made it feel more like spending a day with friends than a typical tour group. On the drive back toward the city, I kept thinking about those huge stones at Teotihuacan and how small you feel on top, looking out over all that space.
