The Experience

I’d always seen photos of Teotihuacán’s pyramids but nothing really prepares you for that first quiet moment — standing at the foot of the Pyramid of the Sun, early morning mist still clinging to the stones. Our guide, Arturo, waved us over and pointed out tiny obsidian shards glinting in the dirt. “People used to trade these all across Mesoamerica,” he said. I picked one up (with permission!) and it felt cool and oddly heavy for its size. The air smelled faintly sweet, like earth after rain — or maybe that was just my nerves. We’d left Mexico City before sunrise so it was still peaceful, hardly any crowds yet.

We wandered through murals — jaguars, pumas, colors faded but somehow louder in person than in books. There was this moment at the Palace of Quetzalpapálotl where I just sat on a low wall while Arturo told a story about priests watching the stars from here. I didn’t expect to feel so small in a good way. Lunch was nearby (not included), noisy with families and smells of grilled corn and something spicy I couldn’t name. I tried pulque for the first time — kind of fizzy, kind of weird, definitely memorable.

The Basilica of Guadalupe felt like another world entirely: busier, somehow both solemn and lively. Our driver joked about how many times he’s made this stop (“too many to count!”) but he still touched his hat as we passed inside. The old basilica leans a little (you can see it if you squint), and people move through with this gentle hush that made me slow down too. Seeing Juan Diego’s cloak up close — even behind glass — gave me goosebumps. Not sure if it was faith or just being part of something bigger than myself for an afternoon.
