The experience

The day starts with a pickup from your Mexico City hotel and a brief stop at the Angel of Independence before the drive north to Teotihuacan. Once you arrive at the Archaeological Park, restrooms are available and your guide begins at the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, spending thirty minutes on its history and significance. From there you walk along la calzada de los muertos (the main avenue that moved people through the ancient city) for another thirty minutes, taking in the scale and layout of what once stood here.

After a restroom break, you enter the Museum of Teotihuacan Culture to see the archaeological finds that have been unearthed over decades and continue to emerge today. The Sun Pyramid comes next, positioned just beyond the museum. Your guide spends thirty minutes on its major features and what it reveals about the city's structure. The Moon Pyramid follows with the same depth of attention, then you move to the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl: one of the partially restored ruins that lets you picture what the city actually looked like when people lived here. Another restroom stop happens before you leave the park proper.

The caves come next. You descend into subterranean spaces that were homes before Teotihuacan existed and later became sacred ground for the people who built the city above. Fifty minutes in the caves includes sections that held ceremonial meaning and spaces that still carry a sense of awe. From there you transition to lunch: a five-course meal featuring different flavors from central Mexico, prepared by cooks from Teotihuacan itself. If you have dietary restrictions, notify your guide in advance. After lunch, there is an optional tasting of tequila and mezcal along with other local products, with explanations of how Mexico's traditional spirits and goods are made. The return drive to Mexico City takes about an hour.
