The Experience

I’ll be honest — I wasn’t sure what to expect from a full day at Teotihuacan. I’d seen the pyramids in photos, but standing there as the sun came up behind the Pyramid of the Sun (yeah, that’s really its name), it felt different. Our guide, Ana, handed us warm cups of atole before we left Mexico City — thick and sweet, kind of like if oatmeal was a drink? She laughed when I tried to pronounce “Quetzalcoatl” right. The drive out was quiet except for someone’s playlist leaking through their headphones. There’s something about approaching those ancient stones after an hour on the road that makes your stomach flutter a little.

We started at the Templo de Quetzalcoatl — Ana pointed out carvings I’d never have noticed on my own. Walking la calzada de los muertos (the Avenue of the Dead) felt heavy and alive at once; you could hear distant voices bouncing off stone, and someone selling woven bracelets near the entrance. I kept thinking about how many feet must’ve walked here before me. The museum inside the park was cool in both senses — shade and silence after the heat outside — with fragments of painted pottery and masks that looked like they could still be worn. No climbing allowed on the pyramids anymore (Ana made sure we knew), but honestly just being at their base was enough.

After wandering through palacio de Quetzalpapalotl (the murals still had color clinging to them, somehow), we ducked into the caves nearby. It smelled earthy and old down there, almost like wet clay after rain — Ana said people used to live here before it became sacred space. Everyone got a little quiet in that dim light; maybe it was nerves or just respect. When we came back up blinking into daylight, lunch was waiting — five courses from local cooks who seemed amused by our attempts at Spanish. The mole sauce was smoky and rich; I’m still not sure what all went into it but I keep thinking about it.

If you want a day trip to Teotihuacan from Mexico City that isn’t rushed or stuffed with extra stops, this is it. We had time to just…be there. And yeah, there’s tequila tasting at the end if you’re up for it (I was). Sometimes travel days blur together but this one keeps coming back when I close my eyes — especially that first breath inside the cave.
