Sunset Sandboarding at La Paz Dunes: 100-foot dunes

Ride sand dunes 20 minutes from the city, then watch the sun drop over the Sea of Cortez.

Sandboard down 100-foot dunes at El Mogote, a desert playground 20 minutes outside La Paz, with a certified guide teaching you the basics before you climb and ride progressively higher slopes. The experience

You've got a free afternoon in La Paz and want something completely different from a beach day. The tour picks you up from the meeting point and drives 20 minutes into the Baja desert to El Mogote, where sand dunes tower up to 100 feet high between the desert floor and La Paz Bay. Your guide hands you a sandboard, helmet and goggles, then teaches you how to ride. It works like snowboarding, but on sand instead of snow. You start on the smaller dunes to get the feel of it, then gradually work your way toward the higher peaks, climbing back up after each run and doing it all over again.

The timing is built around sunset, which shifts between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM depending on the season. As the light turns golden, you climb the dunes one more time to watch it sweep across the sand, the cactus-filled desert and the Sea of Cortez stretching out below. The group maxes out at 8 people, so there's room to move and time to ask questions without feeling rushed. Your guide takes photos throughout the afternoon and emails them to you after the tour ends.

Roundtrip transport from the meeting point, all sandboarding gear, water, soft drinks and snacks are included. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring a hat and sunglasses. A jacket helps once the sun drops, especially in winter. The tour involves walking and climbing on sand, so you should be comfortable with moderate physical activity and able to follow the guide's instructions safely.

Is this one for you?The guide speaks English or Spanish, so choose the language that works for you. The small group of 8 means you get more instruction time as you learn to ride, rather than being one of dozens on a crowded tour.
