Ride into the jungle, swim in two cenotes, eat where locals do

A full-day snorkeling trip in the Tulum area where you ride an ATV, scooter or e-bike through downtown and deep into the rainforest to reach two cenotes: Cenote Escondido (Mayan Blue) and Cenote Cristal, with time to swim and snorkel in each. The guide shares the history and significance of these natural sinkholes to the Maya people, and the day ends at the Jungle Cantina for a local lunch and a climb up a 50-foot tower above the canopy. Pickup is included from hotels in the Riviera Maya. The minimum age is 18.

The experience

You arrive at your hotel pickup and head out on your choice of vehicle: a full-size ATV, a scooter, or an e-bike. The ride starts through Tulum's downtown streets, then cuts into the rainforest where the landscape opens up. Your guide leads the way, and the two of you navigate jungle trails until you reach Cenote Escondido, also called Mayan Blue for its distinctive color. You'll snorkel and swim here, exploring subterranean caves before moving on to Cenote Cristal, a more natural cenote where you do the same. Between the two, you get snacks and water to refuel.

After the cenotes, the real highlight comes: you ride deeper into the jungle to reach the Jungle Cantina, a rustic spot where locals eat. You'll have a traditional Mayan lunch there, and if you want to see the forest from above, you can climb the 50-foot tower that rises above the canopy. The whole day runs about six hours, and you're supplied with all snorkeling equipment, a backpack, and a heavy-duty lock and chain for your vehicle. Your guide speaks English or Spanish and rides with you the entire time.

The trip works best if you're comfortable on a motorized vehicle or a bike for several hours. The pace is steady but not rushed, and you're in and out of the water multiple times. If you want to double up on an ATV or scooter with someone else, that's an option. Note that pickups north of Tulum (between Playa del Carmen and the Iberostar Grand Paraiso) carry an extra fee depending on how far north you're staying.

Is this one for you?The ride itself is the main event (you're on a vehicle for several hours with breaks to swim and snorkel), so it suits someone who's comfortable on an ATV, scooter or e-bike and wants to cover ground fast rather than walk. If you prefer to stay on foot or have spinal or cardiovascular concerns, this pace and the vehicle time may not be the right fit.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What are the cenotes like when you get there?

Cenote Escondido and Cenote Cristal are both natural sinkholes filled with freshwater, common across the Yucatan peninsula. Cenote Escondido is known for its striking blue color and has subterranean caves you can explore. Cenote Cristal is more open and natural. Both are deep enough and clear enough to snorkel in, and your guide explains their significance to the ancient Maya.

Can I ride an ATV if I've never done it before?

Yes. The trip is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and your guide rides with you the entire time. You can also choose a scooter or e-bike instead of an ATV if you prefer something easier to handle. If you want to share a vehicle with someone else, you can double up on an ATV or scooter.

What's included in the price?

The price covers use of your ATV, scooter or e-bike; all snorkeling equipment; the local Mayan lunch at the Jungle Cantina; snacks and water between cenotes; a backpack; a heavy-duty lock and chain; and hotel pickup from the Riviera Maya. Gratuities are not included.

How long does the whole day take?

The trip runs about six hours from pickup to drop-off, including the rides, time in both cenotes, lunch, and the tower climb if you choose it.

Do I need to book pickup from a specific location?

Pickup is included from hotels throughout the Riviera Maya. If you're staying north of Tulum (between Playa del Carmen and the Iberostar Grand Paraiso), an extra transportation fee applies depending on your exact location. Public transportation options are also available nearby if you prefer to meet the guide at a central point.
