Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Cholula and Puebla

  • Visit Great Pyramid and Nuestra Señora de los Remedios Church
  • Tour Puebla historic city center and main landmarks

Sunlight hit the Talavera tiles just right as we wandered through Puebla’s old town—those blue-and-white patterns almost glowing against the stone walls. Our guide, Ana, pointed out a tiny bakery tucked behind the cathedral where the smell of fresh conchas drifted into the street. I’d never seen so many church domes in one skyline; each one seemed to have its own story. The Rosary Chapel was quieter than I expected for a Saturday, but you could hear faint organ music echoing from inside. We ducked into a market off Calle 6 Oriente, where vendors offered mole paste in every shade of brown you can imagine. It’s easy to lose track of time here—there’s always another courtyard or tiled façade to catch your eye.

Cholula felt different right away—more laid-back, with students chatting outside little coffee shops and families strolling past murals. Climbing the Great Pyramid wasn’t as tough as it looks (though my legs disagreed by the top). The view? You get this wild mix: volcanoes in the distance, church bells ringing below, and that bright yellow church—Nuestra Señora de los Remedios—sitting right on top of ancient stones. Ana shared how locals still celebrate festivals blending old traditions with Spanish ones. If you listen closely near the pyramid tunnels, you’ll hear street musicians tuning up for afternoon crowds. By late afternoon, clouds rolled in and cooled things down—a relief after all that walking.
