One hour in the reef, then the rest of the day on the beach

Snorkeling at the reef off Mahahual includes a one-hour guided dive to three points where turtles, stingrays, fish and coral formations live, followed by lunch from the restaurant menu and an open bar with national beers and mixed drinks at the beach club. The boat ride to the reef takes about ten minutes; guides speak English and Spanish and know the reef as locals. Children are welcome from age 19.

The Experience

The day starts at Los Arrecifes restaurant and beach club in Mahahual. A boat takes you out to the reef—about ten minutes across the water—where trained guides who are natives of the area lead you through three separate points. The snorkeling itself runs one hour. You'll move through the reef among turtles, stingrays, fish, snails, shells and coral formations; the guides know which spots hold what, and they stay with you the whole time. The water is the second-largest reef system in the world, which means the density and variety of what you see is not something you arrange on your own.

On the way back to the beach club, the open bar opens up—national beers and mixed drinks made to order, no limit. You can sit in a beach lounger facing the water and order from the menu whenever you want; a server brings food and drinks to you without you having to leave your spot. The menu includes fish tacos with Mexican sauce, guacamole, hot sauce, corn tortillas and lemon, and you pick what you want when you're ready to eat. The whole day is eight hours, so there's no rush between the reef and the meal.
