The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous stepping barefoot onto the 46ft Sea Ray — mostly because I’m not used to anything fancier than a ferry. The deck was warm from the sun and smelled faintly of sunscreen and salt. Our captain, Luis, greeted us with this easy grin and a cooler already packed with ice. He asked if we wanted music or just the sound of the waves. I didn’t expect that question for some reason — I liked that he cared.

The water off Cancun is this wild blue you almost doubt is real until you’re out there. We cruised past the hotel zone and toward Isla Mujeres, wind tangling my hair (should’ve brought a hat). When we anchored for snorkeling, my friend Ana panicked about her mask fogging up, but one of the crew — can’t remember his name now — just laughed and showed her how to spit in it like a pro. The water was colder than I thought at first dip; schools of tiny silver fish darted everywhere. There was this moment where everything went quiet except for my own breathing through the snorkel — kind of peaceful and weirdly grounding.

Afterwards, we drifted closer to Playa Norte. People were wading waist-deep with beers in hand, music drifting over from another boat somewhere. Luis pointed out a spot where locals like to anchor for lunch — he said if you come early enough you might catch fishermen selling ceviche right off their pangas. We didn’t have time for that (next time), but just floating there watching everyone felt like its own kind of meal. The sun started to dip and everything got softer — colors, voices, even the heat.

On the way back toward Cancun Bay, someone spilled ice down my back by accident and everyone cracked up. It’s those dumb little things I remember more than anything else. I still think about that stretch of silence underwater though — how far away everything felt for a minute.
