The experience
The van leaves Tulum and reaches the base camp in Akumal within 30 minutes. Once there, guides walk you through the gear (swimwear, sunglasses, a bandana, wet shoes, water and repellent), and how to operate the Yamaha 350 CC ATV. Then you ride an 8-kilometer dirt road through the jungle, which is bumpy and demands your attention on the handlebars.
The first stop is La Gran Cueva, the Great Cave cenote, where you dismount and walk 200 meters into a cavern hung with stalactites and carved by rock formations. A second cenote follows, this one reserved for wildlife and left largely undisturbed. The third is a cave cenote where you can swim. The water is cool and the space feels removed from the noise of the ride.
After the cenotes, you return to base camp for a sandwich and time to dry off before the van takes you back to Tulum. The whole outing runs 5 hours from pickup to drop-off. You can ride solo on your own ATV or share one with a second passenger, a choice you make at checkout.
