The experience
The tour opens at Cap Malheureux, where the Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel sits on the northern tip of the island with its famous red roof framed against turquoise water. The small fishing village lies ten minutes from Grand Bay, and the church itself (built in 1938 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary) offers views across to five northern islets, including Coin de Mire. The beach behind the chapel is shallow enough for kids to explore rock pools while you stand on white sand looking out at the water.
From there, the route moves to the Mauritius National Botanical Garden, which stretches across endless acres and holds more than 650 varieties of plants. You'll see the famous Baobabs, giant water lilies, 85 different palm varieties, medicinal plants, and a spice garden. The garden was first opened as a private space by the French governor nearly 300 years ago and is one of the most visited sights on the island. The sugar estate and museum, located in the northwest, covers 5,000 square meters and tells the story of sugar's role in Mauritius's history through films, panorama videos, and local tales. The estate's boutique sells local-made sugars and Mauritian rum.
Port Louis itself takes up the afternoon. You get free time at the waterfront and Le Caudan shopping complex, then move through the central market: a busy place stacked with local textiles, spices, fruits, and souvenirs at low prices. The craft market has its own rhythm and energy. Fort Adelaide, built in 1832 on higher ground 240 feet above sea level, offers a wide view across Port Louis and the harbor. The British constructed it to guard against attack and internal unrest. Along the way, you'll pass French colonial buildings like the Government House and Municipal Theater, the Anglican and Catholic cathedrals, the main mosque, and Chinatown. A driver-guide travels with you the whole day in an air-conditioned family car or minivan, handling all transport and providing commentary on each stop.

What is the Red Church at Cap Malheureux actually like when you get there?
The Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel is a simple Roman Catholic church with a vivid red roof, built in 1938 and situated at the very northern point of Mauritius. It overlooks five northern islets and offers views of turquoise water and white sand beach. The site is popular with photographers and worshippers, and the beach behind allows you to swim or watch fishermen dock with their catch.

Yes. The Mauritius National Botanical Garden stretches across endless acres with over 650 plant varieties, and you explore it as part of the tour. The garden is large enough that it can take more than a week to cover the whole space, so you see the highlights with your guide's commentary.
