The experience
The tour opens at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses, where you walk among 85 varieties of palm trees and giant waterlilies, then move through sections of spices and medicinal plants. The garden holds both endemic species and imports from around the world, and the guide explains what each one is and why it matters to the island. From there you cross into L'Aventure du Sucre, an informative museum housed in an old sugar factory, where the exhibits trace not just sugar production but also Mauritius's history, the slave trade and rum. You sample different varieties of sugar and local rums before leaving.
The second half of the day takes you to Cap Malheureux in the far northwest, where Notre Dame Auxiliatrice, known as the Red Church, sits against the Indian Ocean with the island of Coin de Mire visible to the north. Then you move into Port Louis, the capital, where remaining time is split between the historical market (built in 1828) and the modern Caudan Waterfront. The market is where you can bargain for spices and souvenirs and sample street food. The waterfront holds brand-name shops and restaurants. Your driver also stops at the Citadel for views and points out the Champs de Mars racecourse on the way through the smaller streets.
Lunch is a three-course Mauritian meal with appetizer, main, dessert and non-alcoholic drinks, served partway through the day. Hotel pickup and dropoff are included, as are all entrance fees. The tour runs eight hours total, with the remaining time allotted to transport between stops.
