The Experience
The catamaran leaves with your group—anywhere from one to twelve people—and heads toward Ile aux Cerfs, where an afternoon coffee break waits on the island itself. From there the boat sails further down the coast to a small anchorage where the snorkeling happens. The water is shallow enough to see staghorn coral, minuscule fish, trumpet fish with their elongated snouts, and coachmen with white dorsal fins. The crew fits you with a lifejacket or lifebuoy if you want one, and they stay watchful the whole time you're in the water.
Back on board, the barbecue grill gets going. Lunch is grilled lobster, fresh fish, and chicken, served with sautéed eggplants, garlic bread, pasta salad, green salad, and local seasonal fruit for dessert. The boat also carries South African wine, sparkling wine, and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the day. All snorkeling equipment is provided. The crew has 37 years of catamaran experience in these waters and international safety training; they speak English and French.
The tour runs about seven hours total. It's suitable for all fitness levels, and the boat is wheelchair accessible. You'll pass the southeast islands on the way and can see the monkeys and birds that live there, though the focus stays on the sailing, the snorkeling, and the meal.
