You cook in a family kitchen, not a classroom, and eat what you made.

A hands-on cooking class in Kota Kinabalu where you visit a local market to select ingredients, then prepare two traditional Sabah dishes (chicken rendang or likku and a local vegetable dish) in a family home with expert guidance from your host's mother. The class runs from mid-morning through early afternoon, includes hotel pickup and return transfer, and ends with lunch featuring the meals you cooked plus coffee, tea and dessert. A live guide speaks English or Malay throughout.

The experience

You start the morning with hotel pickup and a drive to the local market, where you spend time learning to identify and select the ingredients you'll use later. This is not a rushed walk-through. The guide helps you understand what each item is and why it matters to the dishes ahead. After about an hour at the market, you transfer to the host family's home, roughly a 20-minute drive, where you're welcomed with refreshments and introduced to your instructor, the host's mother.

The cooking happens in a real kitchen, not a demonstration stage. You work hands-on to prepare chicken rendang or likku, a local recipe, alongside a traditional vegetable dish. The host's mother guides you through each step, and you do the actual cooking: chopping, seasoning, timing the heat. By 1 p.m., the food is ready and you sit down together to eat what you made, along with additional dishes, coffee or tea, and dessert. This is the meal, not a tasting. You're eating lunch with the family, not watching them eat.

The class wraps by 2 p.m. and you're transferred back to your hotel, arriving around 2:30 p.m. The whole experience runs about five hours from pickup to drop-off. An air-conditioned vehicle handles all transport, and your guide stays with you throughout in either English or Malay, depending on what you book.
