The Experience
We met our guide Yuki right in the hotel lobby—she had this gentle way of making us feel like we’d known her for ages. The first stop was Meiji Shrine. I remember the sound of gravel crunching under my sneakers and the cool hush of the forest path; it’s strange how peaceful it felt just steps from Harajuku’s chaos. Yuki showed us how to wash our hands at the shrine entrance (I definitely splashed more than I should have) and explained why people clap before praying. It made me pause—I guess I hadn’t expected to feel anything spiritual in such a big city.
After that, Takeshita Street hit us like a sugar rush. Bright colors everywhere, teenagers laughing in wild outfits, crepes stuffed with strawberries and whipped cream (we shared one; it was sticky and perfect). Omotesando was just around the corner but felt like another world—quiet, tree-lined, older women gliding past in kimonos. We stopped for coffee at a tiny café where the barista bowed so low I nearly spilled my cup trying to bow back.
Later on, we squeezed through Tsukiji Market’s narrow lanes. The smell—fishy but somehow not unpleasant—mixed with grilled eel smoke and sweet tamago skewers. Yuki pointed out which stalls still belonged to families who’d worked here for generations. She laughed when I tried to say “arigatou gozaimasu” to an old man selling tuna sashimi; he grinned anyway and handed me an extra slice. That taste—so fresh it almost melted—is still stuck in my mind.
Senso-ji Temple was our last big stop. Nakamise Street was packed but lively; souvenir shops selling paper fans and little snacks I couldn’t pronounce. The giant red lantern at the temple gate looked even bigger up close. We stood there for a minute just watching people toss coins into the box, clapping twice before bowing their heads. There was something comforting about joining in—even if I probably got the order wrong.
