The Experience
I didn’t really know what to expect when we pulled onto the expressway out of central Tokyo — just that I’d heard about these wild Daikoku car meets for years. Our driver, Sato-san, had this calm way of weaving through traffic in his Toyota Alphard, chatting about his favorite JDM models while the city lights flickered off the minivan windows. The hum of the engine mixed with some distant sirens and that faint scent of sea air as we got closer to the bay. I kept trying to catch glimpses between skyscrapers — it’s different seeing Tokyo from up here, like you’re floating above all the noise.
Crossing Rainbow Bridge at night actually caught me off guard. I mean, you see photos online but it’s another thing to watch those neon reflections ripple across the water right under you. My friend tried to snap a photo but just ended up laughing because her hands were shaking from excitement (or maybe too much vending machine coffee). Sato-san pointed out Odaiba’s Fuji building glowing in the distance — said it always reminds him of sci-fi movies from his childhood. We stopped for a quick break at Odaiba Seaside Park, and there was this salty breeze that made everything feel almost surreal for a minute.
Then came Daikoku itself — honestly, it’s loud in every sense: engines revving, people shouting greetings across rows of supercars and rare JDMs. There was this one guy polishing his Nissan Skyline who grinned when I asked about his modifications (I probably butchered my Japanese but he seemed amused). Kids running around with their parents, camera flashes everywhere. It felt like everyone was part of some big unspoken club. I still think about that energy sometimes when I hear an engine back home.
