Walk the backstreets and sit inside temples before the tour groups arrive

A private guided tour of Kamakura's three landmark temples and shrine (Houkokuji, Sugimoto-dera, and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu) with a government-licensed guide who speaks English or Japanese. The three-hour route covers roughly two to three kilometers on foot through residential backstreets and temple grounds, starting early so you can spend your afternoon elsewhere in the city. Entrance fees for the guide are included. You choose to travel solo, as a couple, or in a group of four.

Step-by-step itinerary

Guided tour of Kamakura temples and shrine

  • Take taxi to bamboo grove temple
  • Explore temple grounds and garden
  • Optional: enjoy Matcha tea and sweets
  • Walk to Sugimoto-dera temple
  • Visit temple and see Buddhist statues
  • Stroll through Kamakura backstreets
  • Stop at first Samurai Shogunate site
  • Tour Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine grounds

The Experience

You start before the crowds do. An early departure means you'll walk through Houkokuji's Michelin three-star bamboo grove and explore the temple grounds and garden while they're still quiet. If you want to sit down, you can order matcha green tea and traditional Japanese sweets at the temple (optional, paid separately). A ten-minute taxi ride gets you there from Kamakura station, and your guide handles the route.

From Houkokuji, a five-minute walk takes you to Sugimoto-dera, the hidden, oldest temple in Kamakura, founded in the mid-eighth century. You'll see the moss-covered stone steps, the Deva Kings, and the main hall: the Buddhist statues sit deep inside, so you get a real sense of the temple's age and depth. Then comes a twenty or thirty-minute walk through the backstreets to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, a spiritual center of the old Kamakura shogunate. This stretch is where you see how people actually live in the residential neighborhoods, not the tourist zones. At the shrine, your guide walks you through the grounds, garden, and main building for roughly twenty minutes until the tour ends.

The government-licensed guide speaks English or Japanese, so you're not following a group script. You can ask about what you're seeing and leave with real impressions instead of just photos. The whole route is walkable but steady: plan for two to three kilometers on foot. A taxi covers the first leg from the station. The rest is on your own pace through temples and streets.

What’s included
