The Experience

Kamakura was the seat of Japan's samurai government in the 12th to 14th centuries, and the tour opens at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, a shrine over 1,000 years old that once stood as the guardian temple of samurai warriors. From there you walk Komachi street, a pedestrian lane running from Kamakura Station lined with local restaurants and shops selling foods found nowhere else in Japan. The route then reaches Kotoku-in temple, home to the Great Buddha of Kamakura: a bronze statue over 11 meters tall that you can enter and explore from the inside as well as view from outside.

The day continues to Hasedera Temple, known as the Flower Temple for its seasonal plantings across expansive grounds where you can walk trails, enter caves and collect amulets or fortune-telling papers. From Kamakura, you take the Enoden train to Enoshima, a coastal area famous for swimming and surfing. Enoshima Benzaiten Nakamise Street connects to Enoshima Shrine and specializes in local dishes like takosen and whitebait bowls. The shrine itself, also over 1,000 years old, sits at the top of Enoshima and is reached by Japan's first outdoor escalator.

The tour finishes at Enoshima Sea Candle, a lighthouse and observation deck offering a 360-degree panoramic view across the Shonan coast and, on clear days, Mt. Fuji. Because the ending point differs from the start, let your guide know if you'd prefer to finish elsewhere. Wear comfortable shoes: the day involves substantial walking, and many of the sites have stairs. Most spots don't accept credit cards, so bring cash for meals and entrance fees, which you cover as you visit each site.
